Orthodontics FAQ

Have questions about orthodontic treatment? At Advanced Orthodontics, we’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions patients ask us. Whether you’re getting started or just curious about what to expect, this guide will help you feel more comfortable and prepared for your visit.

Both dentists and orthodontists care for your teeth, but they focus on different things. Dentists handle general care like cleanings, fillings, and crowns. Orthodontists go through extra training after dental school to specialize in straightening teeth and fixing bite problems with braces or aligners.

Some common signs include:

  • Crowded, crooked, or spaced-out teeth
  • Bites that don’t line up properly (overbite, underbite, or open bite)
  • Teeth that stick out too far
  • Difficulty chewing or uneven wear on teeth
  • The jaw shifts to one side when biting
  • Thumb-sucking habits continuing beyond early childhood

If you’re unsure, a consultation with us can give you the best answer for your needs.

Straightening your teeth is about more than just a nice smile; it can help you improve your confidence. It can make brushing and flossing easier, help you chew food more comfortably, reduce strain on your jaw, and lower the risk of chips or injuries. Of course, many people also feel more confident once their smile looks the way they’ve always wanted.

Treatment times vary from person to person. Many people finish in about 18 to 24 months, but some see results sooner, and more complex cases may take longer. At your first consultation, your orthodontist will give you a personalized timeline so you know what to expect.

Most patients come in every 4 to 8 weeks. These visits are usually short and give your orthodontist a chance to check progress, make small adjustments, and keep everything moving on track. Staying on schedule is the best way to make sure your treatment doesn’t take longer than planned.

Yes, retainers are very important! They keep your teeth in place once braces or aligners are done. Most people wear them full time for the first few months, then just at night. Following your retainer plan helps protect your new smile so it lasts for years to come.

It’s natural for teeth to shift a little over time. Everyday habits like chewing, clenching, or just getting older can cause movement. That’s why retainers matter so much, they hold your teeth in position and keep your smile looking straight long after treatment is over.

In most cases, braces work without the need for extractions. However, if your teeth are very crowded, removing one or more may be recommended to make space and ensure the best results. We’ll only suggest extractions if they’re truly necessary.

Yes! If a bracket comes loose, a wire breaks, or you’re having discomfort that you can’t manage at home, you can call our office for help. We’ll guide you on what to do right away and schedule an appointment if you need one.

Yes, we welcome transfer patients. If you’ve started treatment somewhere else and need to continue with a new orthodontist, we can help. Bringing your records or X-rays with you makes the process even smoother, but if you don’t have them, we can still move forward and get you back on track.
